Push to expand Gardasil vaccine to boys as throat cancer linked to HPV

There is a push to expand the distribution of the Gardasil vaccine, manufactured by Merck & Company, to boys, as recent studies are linking the development of throat cancers to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Gardasil is currently marketed as a treatment for girls and young women for the prevention of cervical cancer, which also is caused by HPV. HPV is a sexually transmitted virus. Gardasil protects against four types of HPV, two of which are most often linked to the development of cervical cancer.

Alopecia areata is a mysterious disorder that can cause everything from a barely noticeable loss of a patch of hair to total loss of all body hair, including the eyebrows. When alopecia was recently featured in the Patient Voices series, several readers had questions about the relations between stress and the onset of the disorder. Here, Dr. Maria Hordinsky, a dermatologist from the University of Minnesota, responds.

Stress has been cited frequently as a factor in autoimmune diseases, including alopecia areata. Yet experimental evidence to decisively link stress and alopecia has been lacking.

India halts vaccine programme after the deaths of four children

Vaccine programmes grind to a halt in India once more, when four children died after they received the measles vaccination in Lucknow. The four children were reported to have fainted soon after they were vaccinated and witnesses reported seeing the children’s eyes roll back as they began to have seizures. All of the children were under the age of two years of age, with the youngest being just six months. Sadly the children died before medical aid workers could reach them.

Introduction

HHV-6 is an infection that can persist in the brain tissue long after the primary infection and after evidence of the virus has long disappeared from the plasma in the circulating blood. Therefore, direct evidence of chronic infection is not easily attainable by standard laboratory tests, even though it has long been suspected as playing a role in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), in conjunction with Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) the virus that causes mononucleosis.
