NCI awards $13.5 million HPV testing contract to Dutch Diagnostic Lab: What’s wrong with this picture?

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced on August 2, 2010 that it has awarded a $13.5 million contract to a Dutch diagnostic laboratory to perform reliable human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) system with short target sequences for the cervical biopsy samples collected at the NCI.

Such reliable HPV genotyping technology was not used by the drug manufacturers in validating the efficacy of the genotype-specific HPV vaccines during the clinical trials required for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, and has been rejected by the FDA for commercial distribution to clinical laboratories in the U.S. for general patient care.

This NCI contract confirms that the current FDA-approved HPV test kits for patient care in the U.S. are not reliable.

According to the pre-solicitation notice, HPV infections are very common in sexually active women and only a small subset progress to cervical cancer. When precancerous lesions appear, they may contain multiple types of HPV. It is difficult with the currently available FDA-approved HPV tests to determine whether the HPV strains present are responsible for causing the lesions, or simply there as a passenger.

Group is the latest to support vaccinating all health workers

The American Academy of Pediatrics plans to call for all health workers to get flu vaccinations, saying unvaccinated doctors, nurses and other medical staffers pose a threat to patients.

The academy, which represents 60,000 pediatricians, is the latest of several organizations that now back mandatory flu shots for health workers. The groups include the National Patient Safety Foundation, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society of Healthcare Epidemiologists.

Although it’s very unusual for an ambitious politician to tell a potential voter to not communicate with him (“not to waste politician’s time”), in Ireland at least, highlighting the “not appropriate” subject of vaccine safety can provoke such a response.

When a campaigner wrote two short emails to a Wexford local politician in late 2008 raising concerns about the HPV vaccine Gardasil and suggesting he do some research into the associated side effects, the local politician’s response was “Please refrain from sending me any further misinformed and unrequested junk spam”.

Mairead Hilliard, of Irish Vaccine Informed Parents, wrote to Counciller Joe Ryan (now Mayor of Wexford, pop 18000), after she noticed that he had joined an online Facebook group campaigning for reinstatement of the cervical cancer mass vaccination program in Ireland.

September 10, 2010. Mothers Alliance Ireland claims THE SCHOOLS VACCINATION CAMPAIGN, which is to be rolled out this month in Irish Schools for 12/13 year-old girls, poses a serious risk to the lives, health and welfare of Irish children, and it MUST BE ABANDONED IMMEDIATELY.

“Critical information concerning the Gardasil vaccine is being withheld from parents and the public and as a result parents are being denied the right to make a valued and fully informed decision about whether or not to consent to getting their daughters vaccinated”, said Mrs. Nora Bennis, MAI spokesperson. MAI has written to the Minister for Health and Minister for Education outlining the very serious concerns the group has about the safety, efficacy and necessity of this vaccine.

Abstract

The host’s immune response to cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is poorly understood. In a longitudinal cohort of women with cervical HPV infections, defined by PCR-based HPV DNA testing, we used exfoliated cervical cells and reverse transcription-PCR to examine the cervical mucosal mRNA expression of cytokines involved in regulating cell-mediated immunity. We identified seven HPV-positive subjects who were found to have cleared their HPV infections 4 months later. In all seven, a T-helper type 1 (Th1) cytokine pattern (expression of gamma interferon and absence of interleukin-4) preceded clearance. The more variable cytokine patterns seen in HPV-negative subjects suggest that the Th1 pattern in the women with subsequent clearance was a response to the HPV infection.
