Less than 15 percent of the Coachella Valley students required to get a whooping cough booster shot have received the vaccine, school district officials report. “It’s going to be a mess if they all show up in July,” said Denise Magee, director of Student Support Services for Desert Sands Unified School District.
A new law passed in September requires all incoming seventh- through 12th-graders to receive a whooping cough booster shot before they can start school in August.
As of April 4, an estimated 4,500 local students received the vaccine out of the more than 34,000 who are required to get the shot.
