According to FDA documents, HPV infections do not lead to cervical cancer. “Most infections by HPV are short-lived and not associated with cervical cancer,” states an FDA news release dated March 31, 2003. According to another FDA document, the Gardasil vaccine has been found to increase the risk of developing precancerous lesions by more than 44 percent in young women already infected with the HP virus strains used in the vaccine.

TRENTON, N.J. — Merck & Co. said Tuesday it will team up with Sinopharm, a huge Chinese distributor and maker of pharmaceutical and other health products, to market vaccines and potentially other drugs.
Merck facilitated the social construction of the human papillomavirus as a problem needing treatment and successfully positioned Gardasil to be the solution to that problem.

In 2006, Gardasil, the first human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration to protect women age 9-26 against four strains of HPV, 16, 18, 6, and 11 that cause 70 percent of cervical cancer cases and 90 percent of genital warts cases respectively.
