At the age of 12, Shania was already a 3 time State Champion Swimmer (3 years in a row in Butterfly, Freestyle and Backstroke) and was going for a 4th year when she was struck down by the Gardasil vaccine which ruined her life for the following 3 years and destroyed any chance of her having a swimming career.
If you’re familiar with the earlier story on Shania, you’ll know she had her first vaccine in about May/June 2009. She reacted straight away, but coming into winter we just thought she’d picked up some cold or flu bug already. Then after her second vaccine things got worse. In August she collapsed at a swim meet in front of hundreds of witnesses and was unable to stand or walk. She had to be rushed to the local hospital where she spent the next 7 hours being tested, prodded and poked. I remember one of the questions all the doctors asked was if she’d just had a vaccine… I didn’t know then what I know now and didn’t connect the two and so didn’t think to mention Gardasil.
In the ensuing months, Shania went through a variety of bizarre symptoms including “dead” arms and legs, muscle weakness, dizziness, fainting spells, brain fog, severe headaches, stomach cramps, her asthma came back in full force, blurred vision, no reflexes, aching and heavy limbs, feverish, extreme tiredness and lethargy, numbness, pins and needles, hair loss, racing heart and irregular heart beat, clumsiness, and a acne like rash that spread over the entire top of her body including the top of her legs and which has left her face scarred – resulting in being cruelly teased at school with kids calling her crater face and telling her she should go kill herself because she was so ugly! Her friends dropped her – refusing to hang out with this strange sick person with the bad skin that attracted cruel taunts from others – it just wasn’t cool to be her friend! Yeah, with friends like those who needs enemies!
Well, you can read about it in the 2009 story. It is now 2012, everything Shania lived for and trained for leading up to Gardasil was aimed at reaching her dream of the Olympic Swim Team, or at least swimming for Australia. Swimming was her passion. Even today she cannot participate or watch swimming on TV because it is too painful for her – that is how much it meant to her. She is still grieving. She couldn’t even watch the Olympics (not that she missed much this year!)
What she did do was throw herself into her other “love” – performing arts. Thank God she had something else she loved to do, but had not had the time to devote to it. From 2010 onwards, time became something she had plenty of but she was limited in what she could do.
Over the past few years with doctors and experts scratching their heads and pretty much agreeing Gardasil looked like the culprit but proving it was going to be the problem (and we would need proof if we wanted to go to court, then we would have problems getting any experts or doctors to publicly stand up and say something because the power of the drug company would destroy their careers – as they have done to other Doctors who’ve spoken out about them). We ended up finding a natural health practitioner with offices in Melbourne and Sydney who was already helping local Gardasil victims. She took hair and nail samples and provided us with a course of treatments over the next six months, which included a strong detox program initially, to try and get the poisons out of Shania’s system.
As the months went on, the severity of the symptoms seemed to lessen. She took up drama classes one day a week after school – because she had enough energy to do that then. (From training every day of the week morning and evening to having just enough energy to do one small training class once a week sounds ludicrous, but for a year she’d had no energy to do anything but lie down.)
Then she did a jazz class. This really took it out of her and she still had issues with various symptoms including physical symptoms which made dancing more difficult for her than others. But she persevered because she wanted to. She gave it a year and then decided as she couldn’t keep up, she’d find a place that was more to her pace…
She had also had to quit singing because another side effect was trouble with her voice, but she persevered with that too because she loves singing.
Cutting the story short, today, 2012, Shania does a less demanding jazz ballet class and still attends a drama class once a week; she continues with her piano lessons and has just auditioned and been chosen by a well respected opera coach in the city. She has won a vocal competition and been awarded an honorable mention from a recent performing arts festival and she has participated in a couple of shows.
We still can’t discuss swimming around her… but she is slowly moving on and looking forward to new dreams and goals now. While her friend’s skins are breaking out, hers has finally cleared up – although scarred – and she has energy to go out with her friends and parties again as well as enjoy her out of school performing arts activities. Looking at her achievements, you wouldn’t think she’d been so sick. Back in 2009, I used to worry some mornings whether I would go into her bedroom and find her still alive. Today, August 2012, I know she has survived. She only had 2 of the 3 injections, but I hope her story will give faith to others who wonder if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you Shania’s mother for your update. My daughter Savannah has been sick for 10 months now following her 2nd Gardasil vaccination. Her love was soccer. She is just now realizing she just doesn’t have the strength to play. It has been heartbreaking for her. She will begin homebound instruction soon as she doesn’t have the strength to go to school anymore.
