Reading between the lines for real health risks

Research claims published in medical journals can turn out to be exaggerated, misleading and wrong.

I USUALLY avoid reading health supplements in newspapers as they are full of contradictory guff and puff about what is supposed to be good or bad for you.

The puff emanates from drug companies exaggerating the supposed benefits of their products and the guff from PR companies promoting cosmetics or “food as medicine” style products. Governments and health agencies get in on the act too and over-emphasise certain research results to promote public health.

“My daughter, Victoria, has been ill since February 2008. She had her first Gardasil vaccination November 2007. Her second vaccination was in the beginning of February 2008. Immediately after her second vaccination, Victoria experienced severe diarrhea, vomiting and was nauseous for about eight weeks. She had blood work done many times and doctors thought it was just a virus. On March 31, 2008, she had her first seizure.

A new British anti-bribery law taking effect in April is spurring multinational companies to strengthen their compliance programs.

According to The Wall Street Journal, British officials may use the law — modeled after the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act but considered more stringent — to target pharmaceutical companies.
