FDA Misquotes Merck's Gardasil Claims

The misinformation regarding Merck’s billion dollar baby, Gardasil, has spiraled out of control. The FDA has claimed the three part intramuscular vaccine “prevents” cancer, yet Merck does not. In a recent article, the FDA also approved Gardasil “for the prevention of anal cancer”, as claimed below:

“PRNewswire-USNewswire/ –The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved the vaccine Gardasil for the prevention of anal cancer and associated precancerous lesions due to human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16, and 18 in people ages 9 through 26 years.

On the 12th January 2011 a monograph entitled ‘Vaccines & Vaccinations: The need for Congressional Investigation’, was presented to the 112th Congress Oversight Committees. Boasting a hundred and forty three pages, this document is no light read. It’s contents, if true, are extremely disturbing, However, are they disturbing enough to stir the consciences of the U.S Senate and the U.S House of Representatives? If it is read in in it’s entirety it should certainly get a reaction, although exactly what kind of a reaction, is anyone’s guess.

Two British doctors recently wrote a piece in the BBC urging the U.K. National Health Service (NHS) to switch from Merck’s Cervarix human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK) Gardasil HPV vaccine, in its mass vaccination program for young girls. And the two “experts” admit that they only say publicly what helps the vaccine to be well received by the public.

“We, as consultants in sexual health, have been told to say nothing publicly that would damage the current (HPV) vaccine campaign,” they state in their piece.

The proposal for conducting the now controversial “Post-licensure observational study of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination: Demonstration Project,” carried out by a non-governmental organisation PATH for two major pharmaceutical companies, had been turned down by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) as it failed to state the ethical aspects involved in it.
